Are you the Special?
We’re looking for the Special—an ordinary person who does extraordinary things with the help of an awesome team. If you’re talented, helpful, comfortable with change and keen to realize your full potential, we want to work with you. (And you don’t have to be a square-faced yellow plastic person. Promise.)
If you have kids under 12, you’ve probably seen The Lego Movie. If you haven’t, don’t worry. It’s the classic archetypal story of the seemingly average person who discovers his or her extraordinary abilities when the time is right, thus saving the world. It’s wacky and brilliant and there’s lots of life lessons and quotable quotes jam-packed into its one hour and 40 minutes.
When we thought about it, The Lego Movie also seemed like a pretty fitting way for us to talk about our team—the one we have now and the one we want to keep building.
Are you the most important, most talented, most interesting and most extraordinary person in the universe? No? That’s okay. As long as you step up when the time is right, that’s good enough for us.
Sure, we’re looking for what the movie calls Master Builders—in our case, that’s people with mad skills in design, strategy, development, copywriting, photography and customer relationships.
But skills aren’t enough. We want the Special. We want that person who finds him or herself in a new situation and has the courage to try, learn, and do better. That person who knows his or her strengths and isn’t afraid to embrace them. That person who recognizes the power of the team to help us discover our potential for greatness.
Like the wise wizard Vitruvius says to Emmet (aka the Special) when the team is building an underwater spaceship so they can hide from Lord Business’s evil robots:
“Don’t worry about what the others are doing. Embrace what’s special about you.”
For us, the team is the key to realizing our potential. That’s why we love the theme song to The Lego Movie (all irony aside—after all, Lord Business played the song over and over to brainwash his citizens). Taken at face value, the lyrics kind of sum up our belief in teamwork and self-actualization. Everything is awesome when you’re part of a team and living your dream.
Everything is awesome
Everything is cool when you’re part of a team
Everything is awesome when we’re living our dream
So are you the Special?
If you are, bring your Piece of Resistance on over to us. Together, we’ll figure out just how to use it—and your brilliant talents—to make the world a better place.
